What has Gone Wrong with My SEO?

Do you need help figuring out if you need SEO help? Has something put the brakes on your SEO?

How’s the SEO health of your website today? Are your traffic levels climbing or have things stopped in their tracks? Are your conversion rates increasing or do people bounce like your home page is a trampoline? Do you have some seemingly solid footholds for solid keyword phrases?

If you aren’t excelling with organic search engine optimisation, there could be a few reasons for this.

  1. You may have been hit by Google Penguin. Google Penguin was a recent algorithm update that penalised some websites for things like duplicate content and / or over optimisation. This may have sent your traffic levels spiraling downward. If your approach to SEO isn’t delicately balanced, Google could view it as trying to cheat your way to the top.
  2. You haven’t stayed on top of SEO. It takes constant and persistent effort. If you worked on SEO and reached some goals but then stopped your efforts, the search engines might have stopped paying attention to you. It might be time to either resurrect your SEO efforts or to develop a new strategy. (Tip: Most of the things you’ll do for SEO will also benefit your customer marketing efforts, too, so it’s a win-win!)
  3. You’ve got a new competitor with a really aggressive strategy. We often get accustomed to certain things in business. If we take our eye off the ball, even for a second, someone else could swoop in and target our audience. If your traffic is being siphoned and sent elsewhere, it’s time to get more aggressive.
  4. Something changed in your industry. It’s important to make sure your site and your approach are still relevant. Things are continually changing online. If you don’t roll with it, you could wind up becoming archaic to your customers.
